Moss Graffiti

Here's something that's decidedly not green: graffiti! Moss graffiti, also called eco-graffiti or green graffiti, replaces spray paint, paint-markers or other such toxic chemicals and paints with a paintbrush and a moss "paint" that can grow on its own. You can use moss graffiti to adorn a wall or on stepping stones or wooden or ceramic planters.
Unlike spray paint, moss graffiti is all natural and healthy to work with. Aerosol cans spraying toxic paints onto surfaces that will later require time, energy and water to be removed.
As people become more eco-friendly and environmentally aware, the idea of making living, breathing graffiti has become a more green and creative outlet for graffiti artists.
Moss graffiti is a slower process, but the results are very impressive.
What a unique way to add more personality to your springtime garden!

Moss Graffiti Recipe 1

What You’ll Need:
  • Handfulls of Moss
  • 1-2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Buttermilk
  • Water
  • Blender
  • Covered Container
  • Paint Brush
  • Chalk
  • Spray Mist Bottle

What To Do:
  1. Collect moss.
  2. Clean the dirt off the moss.
  3. Sketch out the image onto the surface with chalk.
  4. Place moss in the blender.
  5. Add sugar and buttermilk
  6. Blend until thick like a milkshake. If it gets too thick, add some water.
  7. Pour into container.
  8. With the paintbrush, create your design on the surface.
  9. Leftover moss can be stored in the refrigerator and reapplied if needed.
  10. Spray your moss wall art daily with water.
  11. The design should start to spread over the area.

 Moss Graffiti Recipe 2

 What You’ll Need:
  • One or two clumps (about a small handful) of moss
  • 2 cups of buttermilk
  • You can also substitute with yogurt (vegan yogurt can be used)
  • 2 cups of water (or beer)
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar
  • Corn syrup (optional)

 What To Do:
  1. Gather up as much moss as you can find or buy.
  2. Wash the moss to get as much soil out of the roots as possible.
  3. Break the moss apart into manageable pieces and place in blender.
  4. Add the buttermilk/yogurt, water/beer and sugar.Blend the mixture until completely smooth. You'll want it to have a paint-like texture. If the mixture is at a consistency where you feel it will drip, add corn syrup until the consistency you desire is reached.
  5. Use a paintbrush to apply the moss-paint to the surface on which you wish your design to grow.
  6. If possible, check back weekly to either spray the design with water (to encourage moss growth, especially if you live in a dry environment) or apply more moss-paint.

Thanks for the great pics on this. We've recommended how create moss to our customers in the nursery so many years ago. This is a fun description to present to kids.

I'm glad that you like it. I agree that is very useful for something like this to be introduced to children. Through the game they will learn, develop creativity and become aware of the importance of preserving the environment.
