A diamond-encrusted dress valued at £3.5 million ($5.67m) unveiled in Ukraine

One of the world's most expensive dresses has sparkled on the catwalk in Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

The £3.5million ($5.67m) dress was created by British designer Debbie Wingham, who embroidered the piece with 50 two carat black diamonds, and weighs 29lb (13 kilograms).

Presented at a show featuring several other diamond-encrusted dresses from Ms Wingham's collection, the black diamond dress received a mixed response from the audience in Kiev. The shimmering number received mixed reviews from the crowd; some said it was ugly whilst others felt it was a real beauty. And whilst the jewels may be impressive, so is the price tag of £3.5million ($5.67m).

Outfit made from wine

Have you ever thought that a dress could be made from wine? Think again!

Scientists from Western Australia have added bacteria in red wine to create a cotton-like substance from which they can make shirts, dresses, swimwear... Other alcohol can be used in place of red wine, including beer.

For getting this fabric is used a kind of non-pathogenic bacteria (acetobacter), which are added to wine to convert it into vinegar and a cream that floats on the surface. This layer is then harvested and dried on an inflatable doll to get the desired shape. When the mannequin is deflated the clothing remains. However, when the ensemble dries the fibres become like tissue paper, tearing easily and needs to be kept damp when worn.

The Bioalloy team are now hoping to partner up with other experts to find a way to strengthen the material, which they have named 'Micro be'.

Lead researcher Gary Cass, collaborated with contemporary artist Donna Franklin to deisgn the womenswear range and believes fermented fashion could one day become mainstream.

With a little imagination, will and effort, it is expected that this newly developed material used in other disciplines such as medicine, dentistry or architecture, not only in fashion.

Shoes - Spring/Summer 2012

Shoe trends vary from year to year. Each shoe trend has its place in the fashion world, and some enjoy more popularity than others.

These days it’s all about adding extra height. The platform shoe trend has been dominating the fashion scene and it’s a wonder how much higher heels can actually go! When wearing platform shoes, choose ones with thicker heels for more stability.

It seems that designers are bringing back this shoe trend. Kitten heels occupy the space between flat shoes and sex-bomb high heels. The look is demure and is well suited for those who are averse to sky high heels. The beauty of both the minimalist and ladylike kitten heel is that they are light enough to transcend the seasons, particular when it comes to office and night time occasions.

All that glitters is, well, glitter. That’s right, one of the season’s hottest footwear trends is sparkling, shimmering, and downright blinding. Whether you choose a pair of glitter flats or breathtaking high heels, as long as its glitter, it’s on trend.

There’s been a current trend lately for anything sheer and clear. Last spring some designers made attempts to make transparent shoes popular but no one took them seriously. For Spring/ Summer 2012 number of such designers has increased dramatically and now we understand that last season the shoes made of sheer vinyl were just the first fruits we were afraid to try. Steer clear of anything too tacky though – keep it to a single feature such as a clear heel or clear strap.

Can't wait to start wearing your warm-weather wardrobe? Shoes with raffia or woven straw details are typical of spring/summer trends. Brogue or lace-up shoes with raffia soles were seen on the Prada catwalks, so it’s a look with some weight behind it.

The alternative and grungy trend is still going strong. If the typical black or white creeper shoe doesn’t do it for you, you can always try your hand at lighter or pastel colours. For a more wearable option, choose creeper shoes with a shorter and less noticeable platform.

Clothes Trends also influence trends for shoes. Thanks to the current sport inspired trend, hi-top sneakers are going to become quite fashionable. The usually feminine Isabel Marant has introduced a sporty looking hi-top sneaker into her collection and it’s already a hit with fashionistas the world over.

Are you sick of hearing the term ‘colour blocking’ yet? If so, I’m sorry to say that this trend will be around for a while yet. Colour blocked shoes are a great way of working this trend and adding pops of colour to an outfit.

While they seem to have gone out of fashion for a while, pointed toe shoes are once again back in fashion thanks to designers such as Louis Vuitton. The look can be quite severe so if you want, add a touch of girlish charm to your pointed shoes with bow details.

Some footwear producers use metallic toes for practical purposes, to make their shoes more durable. But during Spring/ Summer 2012 fashion season metallic toes will also be very trendy and designers decided to bring metallic toes to a new, more glamorous level.

Rivets will be a great hit during Spring/ Summer 2012 season. They come on all types of footwear: from high-heeled pumps to biker boots. Rivets can be small and almost invisible or large and made to focus attention on them. Find your way of wearing rivets this season.

Yes, lacing still keeps it high position in the world of fashion. We see lots of it on shoes and sandals but it’s no longer as trendy on boots.
When D&G showcased their Spring 2011 collection with tons of wedges we realized the style would stay with us for long. For Spring/ Summer 2012 season wedges are still very popular as well as espadrilles. They are less colorful though.

There seems to be a shoe trend to cover all manner of different tastes and styles.
