Doctor pulls 5 inches live worm from man's eye

The patient suffered pain for more than two weeks before he decided to go to the doctor because of eye irritation. He did not expect to experience a scene from a horror movie - from his eye was removed live worm 5 inches (13cm) long!

Doctor pulls 5 inches live worm from man's eye

When Dr V. Seetharaman examined 75-year-old patient P.K. Krishnamurthy at Mumbai's Fortis Hospital this week, the eye expert was shocked by the highly unusual sight of the writhing parasite and had to operate speedily to remove it before serious damage was caused. Seetharman stated afterwards that: “It was wriggling there under the conjunctiva. It was the first time in my career of 30 years that I had seen such a case.”

The eye specialist removed the parasite in a 15-minute operation, making a small incision in the conjunctiva (the thin membrane around the eye) while Saraswati, the patient’s wife, looked on in horror.
According to doctor, there was a possibility that the worm, before it entered the bloodstream and to the eye, enters through a cut in the patient's foot or from eating raw or poorly cooked food.

The 5 inch long parasitic worm was alive for 30 minutes following the surgery, and was sent to the hospital’s microbiologists for identification.

Python for dinner? Why not!

Python, wild boar and lion fish will be on the menu this weekend in Miami.

Three local chefs will participate Saturday night in a cook-off competition using the invasive species as key ingredients. With no natural predators, these invasive species disrupt the local ecology. The goal is to raise awareness about how the animals impact South Florida's ecology - and perhaps even generate an appetite for them.

Todd Erickson, executive chef of Haven Gastro-Lounge; Bradley Herron, chef de cuisine of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, and Timon Balloo, executive chef of Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill will compete for the title of “Best Invasivore Chef.” The cooking fest will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday at Villa 221, at 221 NE 17th St., Miami. “I think this will be fun and I’m very excited to see what Timon and Bradley do,” Erickson said. “Some good food is going to come out of it.”

Funds will also be raised for Fertile Earth Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to promoting environmental awareness.

The Healthiest Meal Ever - Unveiled!

It's not exactly what you could call fast food. In fact, it took years of effort.
Researchers whittled 4,000 health claims down to 222 before creating the ultimate superdinner that includes salmon terrine, chickencasserole and yogurt blancmange.

Here's a look at the super-healthy meal:
  • Fresh and smoked salmon terrine, which contains Omega 3 (good for brain and heart function)
  • Mixed leaf salad with Extra Virgin Olive Oil dressing (for maintaining cholesterol)
  • High-fiber multigrain bread roll
  • Chicken casserole with lentils and mixed vegetables (good for iron absorption)
  • Live yogurt-based blancmange topped with walnuts and a sugar-free caramel-flavored sauce (good for digestion and blood glucose control)

Here's some addition to that meal:
  • The inclusion of guar gum in the dessert is said to help in the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol, while lactulose 'contributes to an acceleration of intestinal transit'.
  • The walnuts in the topping are a superfood - consumption of 30g a day, or a small handful, is proven to 'contribute to the improvement of the elasticity of blood vessels'.
  • The scientists also included their own sports drink creation which could genuinely claim to boost performance. Its many ingredients include micro nutrients such as biotin, calcium, zinc, chromium copper, iron, potassium, selenium, and magnesium.
  • Biotin, for example, can help the metabolism, the nervous system, skin and hair, while calcium is good for muscle function and the bones.
  • Other recommendations include a concoction for dieters, a mixed berry shake that serves as a meal replacement.
  • Its ingredients include Glucomannan, which contributes to weight loss for someone on a calorie controlled or energy restricted diet.
  • For cold days or nights, there is a velvety hot chocolate drink containing melatonin, which helps send you to sleep quickly at night.
  • As a final helpful thought, the experts recommend activated charcoal tablets, which contribute to 'reducing excessive flatulence after eating'.

Dr Paul Berryman, the Leatherhead chief executive, conceived the idea as a perfect airline meal, but says the ingredients and dishes would work just as well in the home.
"We have also shown that healthy foods do not have to be dull.We carry out thousands of consumer taste tests a year and one thing is clear. No matter how healthy, if foods do not taste good they will not sell," he said.

Nonomom, Pregnant with 9 babies in Mexico

A Mexican woman named Karla Vanessa Perez is pregnant with nine babies - six girls and three boys - the country's main broadcaster Televisa reported on Thursday night, and is now being dubbed as NonoMom or NueveMom.

But when reporters from the Mexican newspaper investigated, they learned she’s actually not pregnant at all. Her mother, Francisca Castañeda, told El Diario de Coahuila that Perez has three children, ages 15, 12 and 4 and after the last was born, had an operation to prevent her from getting pregnant again.

She was busted shortly after for lying about it by the news outlets she was interviewed by. Karla Vanessa Perez, of Coahuila, Mexico, reportedly said she was already the mother of triplets– which is also not true –and had a fertility treatment in order to acquire another multiple-embryo pregnancy.

José Salvador Gallegos Mata, a member of the Mexican Society of Gynecology and Urology told the newspaper that someone who would make such false claims “needs to urgently say ‘I’m here. Please look at me, I exist.'” He added, “That woman needs urgent psychological treatment.”

All Going Blue for Autism Speaks

An estimated 1 in 88 children are identified with an autism spectrum disorder according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. Two years ago the figure was 1:110. Two years before that 1:150. Autism is nearly five times more likely in males, impacting one in 54 boys, verses one in 252 girls.
Autism Speaks, the largest autism advocacy organization in the world, prefers the dictionary.
Autism Speaks is encouraging people to light their homes with specially marked blue light bulbs and LED lanterns sold exclusively at Home Depot stores nationwide. People are also encouraged to wear blue on Monday, sport an Autism Speaks puzzle piece pin and incorporate blue in on social media sites pictures.

You may have started to see a lot of blue Facebook profile photos pop up on your news feed. As part of its annual fundraiser for Autism Speaks, Toys “R” Us is incorporating the nonprofit’s “Light It Up Blue” awareness campaign into its efforts.
Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us each have apps that will transform a supporter’s profile picture into a blue autism awareness message. The profile picture swap began this week; the awareness program began on March 1 and will continue through April 30.
This is the sixth year that Toys “R” Us has supported Autism Speaks. Donations to the cause can be made at Toys “R” Us stores and online. So far, the tally is more than $1.2 million.
Monday April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. To commemorate the occasion and raise awareness, Autism Speaks asks people to shine a blue light like those seen in prior years at the Empire State Building and the Paris Stock Exchange. This is the organization’s third year with the “Light It Up Blue” campaign.

Instead of inventing definitions and misleading congress, responsible advocacy groups focus on meeting needs. “These are not just numbers, these are real people with real needs” said Alison Singer, president of the Autism Science Foundation. “We have to focus on building the infrastructure to provide education and services to all of these people and their families.”

World's biggest enchilada

Residents of Iztapalapa cooked up a 230-foot-long, almost 1½-ton enchilada on Sunday. Guinness record official Ralph Hannah announced that it was the world's biggest.
The colossal concoction was made of corn tortillas, white onions, serrano chilis, green tomatoes, avocado, cheese, cream and a sea of salsas, among other ingredients.
"With this Guinness record we are showing the world that Iztapalapa is a high-level tourist destination," said Mexico City tourism secretary Alejandro Rojas.
Mexico City has gone for a number of world records recently, including the largest number of people dancing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and most people kissing simultaneously.
The world's largest enchilada is the latest food to enter the Guinness Book of Records thanks to its impressive size.
Last year a cafe in Sydney, Australia, created the world's biggest burger, weighing in at 15 stone.
The world's longest hot dog was assembled in 2006 in Japan, measuring a mighty 198 feet long.
