Texas woman hit with $1.3 million-plus electric bill

Kristin Harriger's recent electric bill was beyond shocking. Rather than a bill for $100 or so that the single mom from Abilene, Texas, was expecting, she was billed for $1,381,783.92, according to the Business Insider.

"I opened it. I read it. Then just went, 'Oh, my gosh. That's a lot of money," Harriger told the Abilene Reporter News.

She thought it was a joke at first, and even shared photos of the bill with her friends.

After contacting her utility company, Potentia Energy, she discovered it wasn't a joke, but a computing error. Rather than charging her the normal 9 cents per-kilowatt-hour rate, the utility charged her $1,000 per kilowatt hour.
The $1,000 per-kilowatt-hour rate is far above the best offer available to her. The Public Utility Commission of Texas website PowerToChoose.org shows that Abilene residents can get 8.2 to 12.1 cents per kilowatt hour, notes the Abilene newspaper.

In the meantime, she has set aside $150 to pay the bill when it comes.
"I work on a budget," she told the Business Insider. "I'm a single mom with an autistic child who tries to make ends meet. … I get my bills and I pay them."

China news confuses rubber sexual toy for special mushroom

Residents of the Liucunbu village on the outskirts of the capital of the Shaanxi province say they came across a strange fungi-like object as they hit bedrock while drilling a new well. The perplexed villagers decided to call up their local TV station for help, which sent intrepid reporter Ye Yunfeng to their sleepy little hamlet to get down to the bottom of things.

One villager who was there during the fateful discovery of the unidentified object tells the reporter, "When we dug down to about 80m deep, we fished out this long, fleshy object. It's got a nose and an eye, but we have no idea what it is!"

"Even our 80-year-old neighbour here says he has never seen anything like this before," he adds.

Reporter Ye then begins to describe the curious object as the camera pans in on it. "As we can all see, this looks like a type of fungus, on both ends of which you'll find mushroom heads."

"On this side, you can see what looks like a pair of lips," she adds. "And on that side, there is a tiny hole which extends all the way back to this side. The object looks very shiny, and it feels really fleshy and meaty too."

"I've done my own research on the internet," says the afore-mentioned villager. "It's a type of lingzhi mushroom, called the taisui." [Editor's note: Taisui refers to 60 celestial generals named in the Chinese zodiac.]

Without skipping a beat, reporter Ye chimes in with her own research, saying this type of lingzhi is generally found in the Shaanxi region deep underground and is hence rarely seen. "When the Emperor Qin Shi Huang was on the hunt for the secret to longevity," she elucidates, "it is said he discovered this lingzhi was the answer."

Eagle-eyed viewers who saw the report on Sunday immediately identified the mystery mushroom as a double-headed masturbation toy with an artificial vagina on one side and an artificial anus on the other. Yes, you read that right, it was a jack-off aid that some guy used to spank his monkey when he wasn't getting it from his wife.

Overnight, the video of the news report went viral on the Internet, chalking up a few million views across multiple video-sharing sites.

The next day, the embarrassed TV show issued the following apology on its Sina Weibo profile:
An open letter to all netizens and viewers: Hi everyone, one of our news reports which aired last night has made everyone laugh. This incident has been widely followed, shared and commented on. As our reporter was still very young and unwise to the ways of the world, this report has brought great inconvenience to everyone. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for your criticism and correction. Please forgive our oversight!
The villagers of Liucunbu, in the meanwhile, heaved a sigh of relief that they resisted their instinctual temptation to stir-fry the "mushroom" and put it in their mouth.

Check In, Swim Out: The Boggsville Boatel

Artist and boat-builder Constance Hockaday has constructed a series of floating hotel rooms and a theater at Marina 59 at Far Rockaway in New York City. Boggsville is a floating hotel and theater built in the Neutrino tradition, that is, fashioned out of abandoned and re-claimed boats from the marina. Five of the vessels are leisure fishing crafts from the 70’s and early 80’s, ranging from 28 to 35 feet long. Another is a 70’s drifter houseboat remodeled into a rustic penthouse. The boats are all moored around a floating platform in the middle of a small bay.

Named for Ms. Nancy Boggs, who would move her floating brothel to either side of the Willamette River of Portland to evade the law – depending on where the authorities were bringing trouble to her business – the Boatel explores the boundaries of the hospitality experience.

The Neutrino drifted into Port Isabel, Texas where a 19 year-old college dropout named Constance Hockaday was living with her parents. Hockaday, a rather alienated young woman, immediately became enthralled with the idea of living on a boat and not paying rent. Before long, she was on the boat, so to speak. Her life hasn’t been the same since.

“It’s kind of a post-apocalyptic adventure,” said Katie McKay, 34, a designer from Brooklyn who was staying aboard the houseboat with four friends. “It doesn’t feel like you’re in New York at all.”

The Boatel is the work of an artist, Constance Hockaday, who said she hopes to attract the romantic and the adventurous — and amid them, the marina’s neighbors — to this unlikely getaway. Under the auspices of Flux Factory, a Queens gallery, it will be open for reservations Thursday through Saturday all summer long, an experiment in urban vacationing and D.I.Y. ingenuity.

“When you think about it, the water is the last remaining open public space,” said Jean Barberis, the artistic director of Flux Factory. “As artists and creative people venture more and more into the outer boroughs, there’s less and less unclaimed territory on land. But the water is still completely open.”

Boggsville Boatel is a floating hotel and theater fashioned out of abandoned and re-claimed boats, all of which sleep 2-5 people. Five of the vessels are leisure fishing crafts from the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s, ranging from 28 to 40 feet long. Another is a 70’s drifter houseboat remodeled into a rustic penthouse. Rooms include dinner and access to the Swimming Cities GOING AWAY PARTY on Sept 10, from 8pm-late. Kick it on your poop deck four blocks from the beach with cold beer, all of your friends and swim trunks—plus Cocktail Cruises in Jamaica Bay, Jerk Burgers & Pineapple Hot Dogs by Carnival Queen Lamar Iposa and Sea Shanty Karaoke.

July 7 – September 4
Marina 59, 5914 Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway

A woman "got pregnant" with squid

A woman got pregnant with squid! Although it sounds absolutely incredible, the story is true, and published it in a scientific journal University Bethesda of Maryland. Scientists at the biotechnology department of the University gave an explanation of what happened and how it happened.

A woman (63) has experienced trauma while in a restaurant was eating squid, which was not removed from the sperm sac, when it is in her mouth infested 12 spermatophores of this animal.

Science magazine explains that the woman, after a fatal bite in several places in the mouth felt a sharp pain that was actually the result of a "climax" of the remaining bodies.

The doctors removed from her mouth spermatophores that she received through a special membrane to the language, the inside of the cheek and gums. Fortunately, the woman has not swallowed part of the uncleaned squid, immediately spit it.

A similar case was reported in Japan last year, when the woman also bit into a bag of sperm in raw squid, and afterwards felt a sharp pain in the mouth. She was took with her the remaining of squid in which they found bags of sperm at the hospital .

This kind incidents, in which people may happen that their mouths literally stay "pregnant" from the sperm of seafood, are mainly confined to the Far East, where it is common custom to eat raw fish. In the West, all internal organs are removed during the preparation stage so there is no such risk.

Researchers who published the paper explained that there is no danger of such impregnation spermatophores on the skin of people, because it is too thick to receive it. One of the authors of the paper has led that the she was ejaculated by the hands of hundreds of spermatophores, but never felt any sting.

Reproduction of deep-sea squid is still subject of research because scientists find it difficult to get to their habitat. It is known that the spermatophores are implanted in a female with male hektokotil, that is a separate tentacle, and receive it on the skin or muscle.

The Healthiest Meal Ever - Unveiled!

It's not exactly what you could call fast food. In fact, it took years of effort.
Researchers whittled 4,000 health claims down to 222 before creating the ultimate superdinner that includes salmon terrine, chickencasserole and yogurt blancmange.

Here's a look at the super-healthy meal:
  • Fresh and smoked salmon terrine, which contains Omega 3 (good for brain and heart function)
  • Mixed leaf salad with Extra Virgin Olive Oil dressing (for maintaining cholesterol)
  • High-fiber multigrain bread roll
  • Chicken casserole with lentils and mixed vegetables (good for iron absorption)
  • Live yogurt-based blancmange topped with walnuts and a sugar-free caramel-flavored sauce (good for digestion and blood glucose control)

Here's some addition to that meal:
  • The inclusion of guar gum in the dessert is said to help in the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol, while lactulose 'contributes to an acceleration of intestinal transit'.
  • The walnuts in the topping are a superfood - consumption of 30g a day, or a small handful, is proven to 'contribute to the improvement of the elasticity of blood vessels'.
  • The scientists also included their own sports drink creation which could genuinely claim to boost performance. Its many ingredients include micro nutrients such as biotin, calcium, zinc, chromium copper, iron, potassium, selenium, and magnesium.
  • Biotin, for example, can help the metabolism, the nervous system, skin and hair, while calcium is good for muscle function and the bones.
  • Other recommendations include a concoction for dieters, a mixed berry shake that serves as a meal replacement.
  • Its ingredients include Glucomannan, which contributes to weight loss for someone on a calorie controlled or energy restricted diet.
  • For cold days or nights, there is a velvety hot chocolate drink containing melatonin, which helps send you to sleep quickly at night.
  • As a final helpful thought, the experts recommend activated charcoal tablets, which contribute to 'reducing excessive flatulence after eating'.

Dr Paul Berryman, the Leatherhead chief executive, conceived the idea as a perfect airline meal, but says the ingredients and dishes would work just as well in the home.
"We have also shown that healthy foods do not have to be dull.We carry out thousands of consumer taste tests a year and one thing is clear. No matter how healthy, if foods do not taste good they will not sell," he said.

Mysterious Object at the bottom of the Baltic

When the Swedish researchers delved a year ago to explore the bottom of the Baltic in search of wrecks from the war have dreamed would run into inexplicable mystery in the deep sea. Not even today can not determine whether it is a UFO, the entrance to another world or something else...

Larger unidentified sunken object  first discovered on June 19, 2011, 275 feet down on the floor of the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland

A year ago, Swedish research expedition Ocean Explorer has found an unusual object at the bottom of the Baltic. Swedish researchers were seeking the wreckage of World War II, and suddenly find that object 18 feet in diameter at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
The water is a mixture of fresh and salt waters, but only about 35% as salty as the ocean. The Baltic waters are so murky that divers cannot see more than a few feet. The basin between Sweden and Finland was formed by glacial erosion. The Baltic Sea is about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) long and averages 193 kilometers (120 miles) wide, with depths ranging from  55 meters (180 feet) to the maximum depth of 459 meters (1,506 feet).

They immediately started rumors that it was a UFO wreckage, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the ship Millenium Falcon in the series, "Star Wars". Researchers still are not sure what it is.

Because of a lack of funding and bad timing, they have were not able to pull a team together to see for themselves - just the strange, metallic outline, and a similar disk-shaped object about 200 metres away. "First we thought that it was some kind of rock, but now we are pretty sure it's not," said Peter Lindberg of the research team.

According to the testimony of a diver, The object is covered with sooty rocks. "During his 20-year career in which I have over 6,000 dives, I have never seen anything like it. Normal rocks do not burn," said Stefan Hogeborn with no explanation for the sooty rocks.
"I can not explain what I saw, we went down for the answers, but we're back with more questions," added Hogeborn.

With radars and cameras, researchers have discovered and 300-meter track, after an unknown object. Assuming that this is either airstrip or track that the object is left behind.
"We heard a lot of different explanations. Of those that it was a spaceship, to the fact that it is actually the entrance to another world," says Lindberg. "The truth is that we are not sure what it is. Is it a natural phenomenon or a word yet about an unnatural object," he added.

The Ocean Explorer team's sonar pictures show that the object is a massive cylinder with a 60 metre diameter and a 400 metre-long tail deep in the Baltic Sea. A similar disk-shaped object was also found about 200 metres away.

Outfit made from wine

Have you ever thought that a dress could be made from wine? Think again!

Scientists from Western Australia have added bacteria in red wine to create a cotton-like substance from which they can make shirts, dresses, swimwear... Other alcohol can be used in place of red wine, including beer.

For getting this fabric is used a kind of non-pathogenic bacteria (acetobacter), which are added to wine to convert it into vinegar and a cream that floats on the surface. This layer is then harvested and dried on an inflatable doll to get the desired shape. When the mannequin is deflated the clothing remains. However, when the ensemble dries the fibres become like tissue paper, tearing easily and needs to be kept damp when worn.

The Bioalloy team are now hoping to partner up with other experts to find a way to strengthen the material, which they have named 'Micro be'.

Lead researcher Gary Cass, collaborated with contemporary artist Donna Franklin to deisgn the womenswear range and believes fermented fashion could one day become mainstream.

With a little imagination, will and effort, it is expected that this newly developed material used in other disciplines such as medicine, dentistry or architecture, not only in fashion.

A crop circle before the earthquake and the eclipse of the sun in Italy

Last month, before the solar eclipse, there was a mysterious crop circle in the small town Bracciano, Bertinoro in Italy, reports, "Discovery News."

Earthquake, which occurred about 30 km from Bologna on 20th May, woke up a woman who has noticed circular spiral in the corn field. The circle has attracted the attention of self-styled experts on this phenomenon.

Some of them believe that this round of the spiral patterns is not accidental appeared just in time for the eclipse, and symbolically represents the process of the eclipse and the Sun and Earth. However, recent solar eclipse could be seen in Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

Mysterious circles from time to time appear in the meadows, fields of wheat, corn, oat fields around the world, and most of them are in England.

Winged Humanoid - Angel, an Extraterrestrial or a Hoax?

A new video has been circulating recently that claims to be evidence of an angel, or possibly an alien, making a quick stop down on Earth, then flying away in an instant. Is it the work of a holy being, or a homely prankster?

A security video taken on Sept. 11 last year, on a closed circuit television (CCTV) video in Cilandak Town Square, South Jakarta, Indonesia.
It all happens pretty quick and was caught on a security camera nearby, even a few people ran over to inspect where the thing had landed - appears to show what YouTubers describe as an "angel-like spirit" flying into view and leaving in a burst of light seconds later.

First of all, we have one static picture, on which picture of alleged 'light being' is mounted. Nothing in that lobby moves except it. And then suddenly, after it disappears, we see a man in lower right quadrant of video who is walking by, who has suddenly appeared in almost middle of frame, coming from nowhere, apparently un-baffled by appearance of huge winged light creature in front of his undisplayed path. And creature illuminated entire floor of that building. People with flashlights then storm the area where the winged being appeared, seemingly to investigate the strange occurrence.

According to the time stamp on the video, this alien was recorded on September 11, 2011. A woman named Pramana Abbas commented on the event stating: "My cousin was in Cilandak on that night and the people who witnessed it was talking about it the whole night. Its real. They saw this bright light coming down from the sky, hit the ground, then took off."

Some are saying that the video shows an angel -- others think the "humanoid" figure might be a visit from another dimension.

Videos posted on YouTube are fascinating many as they show a mysterious burst of light that some say contains a “humanoid” figure inside. Is this footage of something we’ve never seen before, or another person trying to pass off a fake video as the real deal?

Swiss newspaper prints its entire front page in binary to celebrate going fully digital

Last Friday's (June 8) cover of Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung consisted primarily of zeros and ones to mark the fact that the publication is going fully digital.

Save for the date, the publishing number, price, the newspaper’s website link and an Omega watch advert, the front page is awash with zeroes and ones.

The titles, stories and captions have all been translated into binary, with only the smaller details such as the edition number and price remaining in their original and more readable form.

Can you decode it?
